While majoring in economics at the University of Kentucky, Masthay played football for the Kentucky Wildcats as the team's Punter from 2005-2008. He appeared at the 2006 and 2007 Music City Bowl and 2009 Liberty Bowl.

Indianapolis Colts[]
Masthay was signed by the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent following the 2009 NFL Draft on May 1, 2009. He was waived on August 10, 2009.
Green Bay Packers[]
Masthay was signed to a reserve/future contract with the Green Bay Packers in a deal announced by general manager Ted Thompson on January 15, 2010. In a fierce competition against Australian- American Footballer Chris Bryan during training camp, Masthay was awarded the job on August 4, 2010.
